課程概述

in recent years scholarship in ethnomusicology and related disciplines has continued to challenge writing as a privileged mode for scholarship. moving beyond ethnographic film and audio-documentary toward new media and immersive installation work, much of this work has participated in a turn toward the senses. meanwhile, a conception of the field has shifted, too, as ethnomusicologists do fieldwork on video games, youtube videos, and virtual performances. responding to scholarship in D/deaf and disability studies, some ethnomusicologists have even asked whether we can study music without sound. in this course, we will reflect on and experiment with multimodal ethnography: what are the promises, perils, and ethics of multimodal work? what does multimodality afford for musicians, listeners, and scholars? how might multimodality be more than a trend but something that calls attention to enduring questions in ethnomusicology concerning musical ontology, transmission, and performance?

課程目標
become familiar with arguments concerning multimodal ethnography
experiment with multimodal approaches
create and critique multimodal ethnographic work
課程要求
this course will alternate among mini-lectures, discussion of readings, hands-on projects, and peer critiques of creative work. in each unit, we will experiment with some form of multimodality, performing a venture into multimodal research and presentation. the outcomes for the semester will be a portfolio of multimodal work, including a final project piece. Participants in the seminar are required to prepare for class and to participate in class discussions. In addition to the experiments with multimodality for each unit, participants in the seminar will refine and develop one of their unit projects into a final project with accompanying theoretical / introductory statement and participate in peer critiques of the projects
